Let's put this in the perspective of Magic: The Gathering (Yes, I know it's geeky but bare with me here as this is the only analogy I can think of right now ^^). Anyway... To win in a duel, your opponent must take damage 'til his life is 0. Of course, your opponent will not take this lying down so he'll also try whittle you down to 0. Just in case you can't deal damage as fast as your opponent can, you give yourself life points to prolong the battle and eventually win. Bottom line, both should be done iff taking and giving would be to your advantage ^^
Another way to look at this would be that you give your opponent damage and, in doing so, you take away his chance at winning. Both are still to your advantage and are therefore good ^^
